Pet Surrenders

Surrendering Your Dog or Cat

At the Humane Society of Northwest Montana, we understand that making the decision to surrender your pet is never easy. Life circumstances such as financial hardship, health issues, or changes in living situations can make it difficult to continue caring for a beloved dog or cat. Our goal is to provide a respectful, supportive, and judgment-free environment for pet owners facing this tough choice.

Because we are almost always operating at full capacity, we are unable to accept walk-in surrenders. If you are considering surrendering your pet, please complete our Surrender Request Form to begin the process. Once we receive your form, your pet will be placed on our wait list, and a member of our team will contact you as soon as space becomes available. Please know that we are not set up to accommodate every animal. Aggressive, under socialized, or animals with significant health/behavioral issues will not be able to be accepted.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to accommodate each animal in need while maintaining the highest standards of care for those already in our shelter.

Other Rehoming Options

In addition to our surrender process, we encourage pet owners to explore other safe and compassionate options for finding a new home for their dog or cat. These programs can help you connect directly with potential adopters while keeping your pet out of the shelter environment.

Home To Home™

Website: www.home-home.org

Home To Home™ is a free online platform that helps pet owners rehome their animals directly to loving new families. You can create a profile for your pet, upload photos, and share their story so adopters in your area can contact you safely and securely. This program helps pets transition from one home to another — reducing stress for both animals and owners.

Petco Love Lost

Website: www.petcolovelost.org

Petco Love Lost is a national database that uses facial recognition technology to help reunite lost pets with their families. It also allows pet owners to list pets in need of new homes. Posting your pet on Petco Love Lost increases visibility and helps potential adopters in your community find your listing quickly and easily.

By exploring these rehoming options first, you may be able to find a safe, happy new home for your pet more quickly — and help us keep valuable shelter space available for animals in urgent need of rescue or medical care.
If you have questions or need guidance about the surrender or rehoming process, please call us at (406) 752-7297 or email info@humanesocietypets.com. Our team is here to support you every step of the way.
